Discover the new novel from @laura_enright #RB4U #MFRWauthor #vampires

I’ve been friends with Denyse for a long time. Back when were both dreaming of breaking into publishing and revealing our literary dreams to each other through pen pal-ing.

She’s been kind enough to allow me a few moments on her site to announce the publication of Ujaali, book 2 in the Chicago Vampire Series. I’m pretty excited about it, not only because the publication of a book can be exciting but because I never expected to have a book one in a vampire series let alone book 2.

Last year To Touch the Sun, book 1 was published after quite a curious start years before. I was chasing after the interest of an agent that I’d been in cordial contact with. Noticing on the agency website that they represented a vampire series, I decided to try my hand at that genre. While I enjoyed reading the genre and watching the films, I had no desire to write a novel. It was all an experiment based on two words: Vampire chef.

Cut to “the End”: After a lot of fiddling I came up with Narain Khan and his story as detailed in To Touch the Sun (TTTS).

Narain Khan, a young man from India, goes to fight in France during WWI hoping to study the European cuisine after the war. It’s his dream to become a famous chef. Falling to shrapnel during a push across No Man’s Land, later that night, he’s attacked by feral vampires that scavenge battlefields. He awakens as a sentient vampire, able to move about in society, with some restrictions. After a few years he meets a woman named Sophie and early on they discover that he can feed off her without her succumbing to vampirism. So with her help, he’s able to achieve his dream. The novel opens in present day Chicago with Narain reaching a crossroads. Sophie’s recent death has taken away his love and his food source. While it needn’t be fatal, Narain had always found hunting his sustenance a reprehensible act. But if he doesn’t feed, his body will make the decision for him and the last thing he as a popular chef and restaurateur and his normal business partner Dom Amato need is for him to lose control. Adding to his stress is his attraction to microbiologist Cassie Lambert who has a curious connection to his past, as well as the emergence of a ghost from his days in the war. Captain Reginald Jameson was a sadist when he commanded the troops in the trenches of WWI. Having also succumbed to the vampire condition, he’s infinitely more dangerous. He’s come to Chicago to chase down a mutant vampire of his own making and the presence of them both is a threat to Cassie. A threat from which Narain is uncertain he can protect her.

Once I had it all figured out, I fell in love with this novel.

The woman who had no desire to write a vampire novel now can’t stop writing the stories. I’ve since written books 3 and 4 and a spin off featuring paranormal investigators that appear in #3. In fact, the idea for Ujaali came upon me as I was writing the epilogue to TTTS.

It all flowed like water.

They say timing is everything and I guess mine was off. The agent liked the story idea I verbally pitched him at a convention and told me to send him a proposal when the novel was finished. By the time I was able to send him the proposal however I was told he’d left the agency (I’d find out later that he left the business altogether).

So I hunted for an agent or publisher for TTTS: the novel I was now obsessed with getting published. During this time I also saw the publication of Vampires Most Wanted: The Top Ten Book of Bloodthirsty, Stake-wielding Slayers and Other Undead Oddities, the second book I’ve written for Potomac Publishers’ nonfiction Most Wanted Series.

Then in 2013 came Dagda Publishers an indie publisher located in Nottingham, England. They were interested in TTTS and published it in 2014.

In October 2015, Ujaali, book 2 was released. Out of the books in the series that I’ve finished so far, I think Ujaali is my favorite. Partly, because it was unexpected. But also because of themes I bring up in the novel. With the series as a whole I’ve tried to put a new spin on the genre and I think that’s particularly evident in 2 in which Narain finds himself tested again, this time in a much more personal way and while he’s still slightly reeling from events of TTTS.

Not to give too much away, cause there are some surprises, in Ujaali, Narain finds his life finally getting back on track when the consequences of a careless act committed in anger and misery decades before come back to haunt him. The situation leads him to lie to Dom Amato who he’s never lied to, and to do the unthinkable to Cassie. At last to help the victims of his careless act he must turn to his greatest nemesis who is only too happy “to help” for a price.

It was fascinating to explore this dark side to Narain as well as his relationship to the other characters. Another reason the project excited me. My hope of course is that it will excite the reader as well.

Both TTTS and Ujaali can be found in paperback and Kindle formats at Amazon.

People can visit my Amazon Author Page. They can also visit and like the Chicago Vampire Series Facebook Page, where I hope to run contests occasionally for people to win free books. They can follow me on Twitter @laura_enright and visit my Website. And book trailers and chapter readings can be found at my YouTube channel.

And thanks Denyse for allowing me this chance to tell people about my vampires. (You are most welcome, Laura!!)

The Sheriff Meets His Match by Jacquie Biggar (Wounded Hearts 4) @jacqbiggar #Contemporary #RomanticSuspense

Jack Garrett has been stung by love in the past so he's not in a hurry to get burnt again, but he can't deny his attraction to the new receptionist, Laurel Thomas.

When trouble comes to Tidal Falls, Jack worries that Laurel is in over her head.

Laurel loves her dysfunctional family but dreams of a place to call home. Just as she settles into a new life, her old one catches up to her and delivers chaos to the town.

Can these two strong personalities find a way to trust in each other and find their happy ever after?

“This isn’t a good idea,” she whispered as his head lowered.

“Probably not,” he agreed just before he consumed her, there was no other word for it. She’d been kissed before, but never like this. There was nothing but Jack. From the faint spicy scent of his cologne paired with the impossible width of his shoulders, to the exquisite firmness of his mouth upon hers.

Laurel grabbed his forearms and held on for dear life, caught up in a maelstrom of desire. He tasted like the finest chocolate, wickedly delicious and bad for her health. This couldn’t end well for either of them, but she couldn’t bring herself to step back.

Soon.

Just a little more.

From the time Jacquie was twelve years old, she knew she wanted to be a writer. That year she wrote a short story called Count Daffodil after spending countless hours searching for ideas. The story garnered Jacquie an A and was read aloud through the school's loudspeaker system. Needless to say, after that she was hooked.

Jacquie grew up, got married, raised a family and left her writing urges to simmer in the background unattended.

She owned and operated a successful diner in her hometown for a number of wonderful years before deciding to live her dream of becoming an author.

Jacquie's first book, Tidal Falls, a romantic suspense novel about second chances, released September of 2014.

SOMETHING MOOR: An unexpected trip to Ireland takes Caragh McCarthy back to her ancestral home, and the past collides with the present when car trouble strands her on the moors of Country Tyrone. When Kelan O’Shea comes to her rescue, a 300 year old injustice might yet be set right, and a promised future can be fulfilled.

Excerpt:

“Where are you heading on a night like this?”

Kelan O’Shea tucked a flashlight into his backpack and smiled. “I’ve got to get home, Maeve,” he replied. “You know that.”

She pouted and shook her head before coming to stand at his side. “They can manage without you for a night, Kel.”

“And here was me thinking I was indispensable.” He grinned and held up a hand when she would have tried to dissuade him. “I have to go.” He ignored her glare and headed out the door. Maeve was getting a little too clingy for his liking, and despite a lifelong friendship, he would soon stop visiting her. She ran a wonderful stable with excellent horses, and he enjoyed his hours spent on the trails. But… he laughed at his own thoughts, always a but to ruin things.

He reached the stable and led his horse out into the damp evening air. The storm had been torrential, holding him up longer than he intended. He mounted and nudged the gelding into an easy cantor. The animal was familiar with the route, and required little guidance.

He was only a mile or so from home when the horse deviated from their usual trail. A minute or two later, Kel spotted why. He reined in his horse and slid from the saddle in an easy motion. The ground beneath his feet was slippery. He paused just long enough to be sure he wouldn’t end up on his arse with his next step, then he crossed carefully to the figure lying in the rain-soaked grass. He dropped his pack and hauled out the flashlight. A quick once over twisted something unnameable deep in his bones and he swallowed the reaction.

The unconscious woman he’d found was a stranger. Her dark hair was soaking wet and tangled strings clung to her ashen features. Blood stained one shoulder of her lightweight jacket. He carefully picked her up and took her to the patient horse. It took him a few minutes, but he got her positioned in front of him and he touched heels to the sides of the gelding.

“Come on now, boy, we need to get home in a hurry.”

The horse agreed, he picked up his pace.

* * * * *

“How is she Doc?”

Seamus Payne was an old family friend, and he eyed Kel for a few seconds.

“Why was she out there on the moor? Even a stranger should have known better than to attempt that.” He closed his medical bag before adding, “Why in hell were you out there?”

Kel shrugged. “I got delayed by the storm.”

“Know who she is?”

“Caragh McCarthy,” Kelan said. “She was headed here, but wasn’t due for another day.”

“She the one you’ve been waiting for?”

Kel hesitated, then looked at the woman lying unconscious in the bed. “She might be. Is she going to be all right?”

“Keep an eye on her, she may have a slight concussion. She hit that rock pretty soundly. The bleeding’s stopped, and the few stitches won’t need to be in long.”

“I’ll keep an eye on her.”

Payne had just reached the door when Kelan stopped him with a question. “Did you see an abandoned car on your way in?”

“Half a mile from where you found her.”

“Can Robbie tow it here in the morning?”

“I’ll ask him when I get home, but I’d say yes,” the doctor said. “I want to see her at the clinic, Kel. It would be a good idea to get a CT scan. I don’t think she’s incurred a serious head injury, but I’d rather be cautious.”

“I’ll bring her in as soon as possible,” he promised.

When the door closed, Kelan pulled up a chair and sat a short distance from the bed. Leaning back in his chair he shook his head. “What the hell were you thinking?” he mused.

The TransCanada Romance Writers Holiday post is HERE

Monica Beggs by @Sheri_Fredericks #Contempory #Humor #Romance

Monica Beggs is more than the hottest porn star out on DVD--she's Finn Daniel's next assignment.

Lights. Camera. Lube?

Famous porn star Monica Beggs wrapped up another grueling on-location movie shoot when the Colombian cartel attempted to kidnap her. Their guns are as real as the price on her pretty head.

Former Special Ops and present day surfer, Finn Daniels recognizes a lady in distress when he sees one—especially if it’s his adult film crush being hustled out the door. He’s no longer in the business of busting up the underworld, but that doesn’t deflect his moral compass.

In a fast-paced adventure-- over land, sea, and air-- playing it hot and heavy will only lead them straight into action!

Name: Monica Beggs (Moni to my friends)

Gender: Female, duh!

Age: 20-something (I’m not telling – LOL)

Profession: Former multiple AVN award-winning adult film actress, now pencil-pushing Admin Assistant to Pacific Surf, Inc.’s CEO. (aka, my husband, Finn.)

Do you have any special skills or training?
Uh, well…yeah. No talent that I can use in my new career. (male voice calling from outside the office, “I could use some of your special skills right now, Sweetheart!”) Little does Finn know, I’ve been taking private instruction in mixed-martial arts so I can travel with the team when they go on assignment.

How would you describe yourself?
The luckiest woman alive. I’m here, not locked up in a Cartel compound in God-only-knows-where. Plus, I have Finn.

Who is your significant other(s)?
Finn Daniels, former Special Ops agent turned surfing accessory entrepreneur, and sometimes hired investigative bodyguard. Is that last one a real job?

How would they describe you?
Oh, I’m sure they’d come up with a few doozies, but mostly the worst coffee maker in California, spunky to the point of irritating, buyer of great shoes, and the Energizer lover.

Tell us about your family.
I have a sister and five nieces and nephews, my mom lives in Las Vegas (last time I heard), and my dad is in Texas for another fifteen years… doing time. Finn and everyone here at Pacific Surf are my family now.

What do you think was left unsettled in your story?
Not so much unsettled as unmentioned, was how Finn dealt with my former manager, Darrell, when he approached us before the last AVN Awards. Let’s just say he sat in the back, in the dark, where nobody would see his face.

If you could change anything about your story, what would it be?
I’d happily change the choices I made, or maybe the frustration I allowed myself to feel. But then there wouldn’t have been the adventure that brought Finn and I closer together, the force that drew us together, or the life threatening circumstances that showed me the proof of Finn’s love. Because of all that, I’d never change a thing.

Legends of Christmas & a Giveaway! #RB4U #TCRW #MFRWauthor

Most of us know a Christmas stocking refers to an empty sock or sock-shaped bag that children hang on Christmas Eve in the belief that Santa Claus will fill it with presents. Typically, the gifts are of a small nature, often small toys, goodies like candies and fruits, coins or other such items referred to as stocking stuffers. But what’s the story behind the hanging stockings? Curious? Read on...

The tradition of Christmas stockings is said to have originated from the actions of a man named Nicholas, who was born in 280 AD, in Patara, a city of Lycia, in Asia Minor. While still young, his wealthy parents died in an epidemic. Nicholas became a Christian priest and used all his riches to help the poor, the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life in the service of God and was made Bishop of Myra at a young age. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his kindness and generosity. True to his calling, Nicholas never married and had no children of his own. But he loved children and often gave gifts to those in his hometown.

A rich man, Nicholas traveled across the country helping people, giving gifts of money and other presents. However, Nicholas always gave his gifts late at night, so his identity would remain a secret. He did not like to be seen when he gave presents, so the children of the day were told to go to sleep quickly or he would not come! Nicholas was eventually named the patron saint of children and sailors (because of his concern for sailors and ships) and came to be known as Saint Nicholas.

Through the centuries many stories and legends have been told of Saint Nicholas' life and deeds. One popular account tells us of a poor peasant who lived happily in a small cottage in Patara, Saint Nicholas' hometown, with his wife and three daughters. But their happiness was short-lived when the wife died suddenly from illness, leaving the poor man and his three daughters in despair. All the burden of household chores now fell upon the daughters while their father trudged on with his life.

When the daughters reached a marriageable age, the poor father became even more depressed for he knew he could in no way marry them off to good men. In those days a young woman's father had to offer prospective husbands something of value–a dowry. Without a dowry, the poor man's daughters were unlikely to marry. The helpless father looked around, desperate for some solution, while his daughters did their own cooking, sewing and cleaning.

Meanwhile, Saint Nicholas had come to know of the poor peasant and his daughters. Knowing the financial condition of the father, the kindly saint decided to help him. But, as was his custom, Nicholas wanted to do this secretly. So he went to the peasant's house one night with a bag of gold and waited for the family to go to bed before he could throw the bag through the open cottage window.

That night, after finishing their washing for the day, the daughters hung their stockings by the fireplace to dry. Little did they know their benefactor was hiding nearby, waiting for them to go to sleep. A little later, after they’d turned off the lamps and fallen asleep, St. Nicholas tiptoed to the cottage window and peeked inside. In the light of the moon, he saw the daughters' stockings hanging close to his reach. He carefully put a small bag of gold in one of the stockings and went away as stealthily as he’d come to the cottage.

When the father found the bag the next morning and opened it, he was ecstatic. There was enough gold in the stocking to pay for the dowry of one daughter. It was a God-send. Who could have sent it, he wondered. With this timely gift the father was able to provide for his eldest daughter and saw that she got married to a nice gentleman.

On another night Saint Nicholas set off with one more bag of gold, and threw it carefully into another stocking, so that the second daughter was provided for.

When his daughters excitedly brought the bag to their father the following morning and opened it, he could not believe his eyes. With this gift the father was able to marry off his second daughter too.

But by this time, the father had grown eager to discover his mysterious benefactor, and the next night he waited and watched. Then, for the third time Saint Nicholas came with a bag of gold and walked to the window. The old lord at once recognized his fellow townsman. He fell on his knees before the kindly Bishop, cried out in joy and gratitude and thanked him with all his heart. With his blessings of Saint Nicholas, the poor father was able to see his three daughters married. He lived a long and happy life thereafter.

And this is how the tradition of Christmas stockings is said to have started in the European countries. It is also believed that Santa Claus is actually an alteration of this same Saint Nicholas, Santa standing for Saint and Claus for Nicholas.

Today, all over the world, the tradition of hanging Christmas stockings continues. Children of all ages and nations look forward to Christmas, and when the stockings are hung, they know the most anticipated time of the year is not far behind.

All she wants is to start over, live a peaceful life…

After an abusive marriage and an ugly divorce, Toni needs to rebuild her self-confidence and start a new life in her hometown. Going home again and confronting people she’d hurt when she’d left is never easy. She’d hung onto the idea of buying a long-abandoned old house and remodeling it to help her recover. But a man from her past has recently purchased it for his business. That’s her emotional breaking point and she does something reckless. Now she must pay the legal consequences of her foolish actions…by working for him.

All he wants is to focus on his work…

Chad’s job as a lawyer working to protect the rights of the abused elderly consumes his time and energy. It cost him his marriage and an aborted child he hadn’t known about. Now he works harder, guards his bruised heart. Yet the return of someone he’d held secret feelings for comes back to town. She upsets his world, starting with minor destruction of his business property and causing him minor injury. He shouldn’t become involved in helping this troubled woman, yet he can’t keep from doing so.

Two heart-damaged people have trouble trusting love again.

“I feel like such a wimp, letting him get to me again.” She moved away and walked over to slump down on the sofa. “All it took was hearing his voice.”

Chad closed the door and took a calming second before he faced her. “You’re not a wimp. That scumbag should be locked up for what he did to you.”

The color had returned to her face once more and she gave him a fragile smile. “I’ve come to realize that everything that happened wasn’t all his fault.”

He blinked at her. “What?”

She shrugged out of her coat and let it fall behind her. “I allowed it to happen, and not just because of the whole love, honor, and obey stuff. I was blinded by his charm, and his ease at throwing me apologies is not an excuse. I saw through them. But I wanted to believe in the magic of love too much. I wanted him to be the Prince Charming of my dreams. He wasn’t. He’d never been that, not even when we started dating. I was just too determined to make him into it.”

“You always were a romantic.” He remembered how much she’d liked the Disney movies, especially the ones with happy endings for one couple or another. Ted had done his best to avoid them. Beauty and the Beast had been her favorite; The Little Mermaid was another one Chad knew she’d watched over and over. To his friend’s disbelief, he had sat with her in the Thornton family room and watched both of them one day when she’d been miserable with the chicken pox. She’d been ten, he fifteen. He’d taken a lot of ribbing from Ted for doing it, but he’d done it anyway. Did she even remember that time?

She gave him an amused smile. “I don’t watch Disney movies anymore. Well, not like I used to do.”

He glanced at the coffee table and the thick paperback lying on top, a romance novel. After what she’d been through, it surprised him. “I would have expected you’d be reading a murder mystery or something dark.”

She shrugged. “I still enjoy a good happy ending, particularly a story that pulls my heart strings. Just because there isn’t such a thing in my life, doesn’t mean I don’t want it for others.”

He understood why she felt that way, but it bothered him. “You shouldn’t give up, Antoinette. Give yourself some time. Don’t rule out having something special because of one jerk.”

Book Tour: King Stud (O'Connor Family Novel Book 1) by @LivRancourt #Contemporary #Romance @EvernightPub

Danielle’s got three months to make her Grandmother’s rundown Craftsman house livable. Her game plan is to get in, get grubby, and get back home to L.A. She needs a carpenter, and her best friend’s younger brother is a good one. It’s hard to ignore the buffed body under Ryan’s paint-splattered sweatshirts, but her friend declares he’s off-limits so Danielle reluctantly agrees.

Ryan doesn’t have the cleanest record, anyway. His recently ex-ed girlfriend wants him back, and he has a reputation for brawling. He’s also had a crush on Danielle since he was a kid. Despite their nine-year age difference, he knows she’s worth pursuing.

Soon the paint under Danielle’s fingernails starts feeling more natural than the L.A. sunshine. She’ll have to navigate plumbing disasters, money problems, and one seriously cranky best friend to find something she hasn’t had before: a real home, and a man who loves her.

Who I am – Liv Rancourt, a fifty-something mother of two, wife, neonatal nurse practitioner, and writer.

What genres I write in – I write contemporary romance, m/m romance, paranormal, and historical. The common thread is humor – I’d rather crack a joke than angst about it.

Favorite genres to read – For the last couple years I’ve read mostly m/m romance, but under that umbrella I’ll read historical, paranormal, and contemporary.

Favorite TV shows – I’d rather read the book, though my sister’s working in the costume shop in The Muppet Show, so I that’s my default favorite this season.

Last movie I saw on the big screen – Um…this is going to make me sound way more cinematically savvy than I actually am, but the last time I went to the movies was in May. I saw a movie called Front Cover, directed by Ray Leung, at the Seattle International Film Festival. The movie was about two Chinese men, one a big film star from mainland China and the other a New York photographer. They’re both gay, but the actor from China is very closeted and the man from NY isn’t, and the way they fell in love and then end their relationship is both beautiful and terribly sad. (Just to put this in context, before Front Cover the last movie I saw was probably the 7th Harry Potter movie. I don’t get out much.)

What’s on my Netflix list (to be watched) – I have no idea. The husband and kids maintain the Netflix list.

Coffee or Tea – Coffee
Chocolate or Caramel – Both, thanks :)
Apple Cider or Pumpkin Spice – I can make a case for them both, lol…
Rock N Roll or Country – Really? You’re going to make me choose?
Lumberjack or Police Officer – I married a carpenter, so I think I’ll have to go with lumberjack.
Tropical Island or Winter Cabin – Island, preferably Oahu.
I write romance: m/f, m/m, and v/h, where the h is for human and the v is for vampire … or sometimes demon … I lean more towards funny than angst. When I’m not writing I take care of tiny premature babies or teenagers, depending on whether I’m at home or at work. My husband is a soul of patience, my dog’s cuteness is legendary, and we share the homestead with three ferrets. Who steal things. Because they’re brats.

I can be found on-line at all hours of the day and night at my website & blog (www.liv-rancourt.blogspot.com), on Facebook (www.facebook.com/liv.rancourt), or on Twitter (www.twitter.com/LivRancourt).
